An amazing album of some 149 photographs
dating from the 1880's, documenting the work of Raphael. In
these days of coffee table books this might not seem surprising
in itself, but in the 1880's this was methodology at the cutting edge of
art history and connoisseurship. This is before the likes of
Bernard Berenson made expertise in the arts recognised and
desirable. Certain photographers such as Frederick Hollyer
specialised in the photographing of major works of art.
